Edumarketer Tip #115: Teleprompters

Uncategorized May 26, 2021

Trying to memorize a whole script for a video is certainly do-able, but can be challenging. Unless you are an expert memorizer or have photographic memory, memorizing a 5 page script about the loan process is a lot.

By memorizing an entire script, you are putting a great amount of pressure on yourself to say everything word-for-word. Almost like you have to record it in one, perfect take.

Luckily, there are some alternative options to memorization - teleprompters!

Using a teleprompter while recording some videos has been a game changer for me. Not only has it saved me time from memorizing loads of content, but it has also improved the quality of my videos.

You may be thinking, how the heck has it improved the quality of your videos? When recording videos and using a teleprompter, your camera and script are both at eye level, making it seem like you aren’t reading from a script. It makes it seem more natural and that you aren’t reading off of a piece of paper or a word document on your computer.

Here are some recommendations for teleprompters:

Teleprompter Apps:

Joe Allen Pro

For $16 you can download the Joe Allen Pro teleprompter app on your iPhone. It allows you to upload a script into the teleprompter, then you use your phone to read off the script. You can change the speed as well, either slowing it down or speeding it up. It’s a great app. I’ve used this application before and recommend it to those who want to try a teleprompter out without actually purchasing one.

Nano Teleprompter

If you’re an Android user, you can download the Nano Teleprompter on your device for $3.99 and use that as a teleprompter. It works pretty much the same as the Joe Allen Pro application.

Teleprompter Devices:

Glide Gear TMP100 Adjustable iPad/ Tablet/ Smartphone Teleprompter

This is a teleprompter device that is designed to be used with a DSLR camera, using your tablet or device for the prompting. It goes over the camera lens and reflects the words up, so that you are looking at the camera and reading your script at the same time.

This is a rather large unit and I’d only recommend using it in a video recording setting that you can leave up as it is rather hard to put up and take down.  It gives you a larger radius for your script so if having a larger area to read from is important, than you may want to consider this teleprompter.

The Padcaster Parrot Teleprompter Kit, Portable Teleprompter for iPhone

A teleprompter device for your smartphone! Just like the Glide Gear TMP100, the padcaster is designed to be used with a DSLR camera and a smartphone. It goes over your camera the same way the Glide Gear does, but instead of a tablet, you use your smartphone.

I have used this teleprompter when I travel and record video for my clients.  It has honestly taken hours off of recording time because I’m able to work with my client to write a script and then put the script into the teleprompter where they just simply have to read it.  This gives you the option to make sure that you are saying exactly what you want to say without having to do several takes.

Teleprompters are great for keeping you on track while recording and reminding you of the information you are talking about. Try out one of these options the next time you record and video and let us know how it goes!
